It used to be the norm for people to go out and grab a pioneer receiver, a Sony DVD player, and two Technic speakers. And that worked great. The audio industry was so standardized that you were able to mix and match the different components and get a great sound from your home theater system. While you are sometimes still able to mix and match different components, it may be better to stick to just one company or even the same company and the same class.
These changes have resulted from three primary reasons. The first is that companies have learned how to market their goods more effectively. They know that if they make their equipment less customizable with other companies’ stuff, then a consumer will buy all of their stuff instead of just one piece. As a result, they keep all the sales. The second reason that it’s not good to mix and match is because of the difference in quality of speaker components. Sometimes, when you buy from two different companies, you are mixing the quality of your sound products. The speakers may be much worse than your amp and receiver. So basically you are pushing a limited amount of power and quality into speakers that can’t handle your full amount. Big mistake! The third reason that you should stick to one quality and company is that these components are made for each other. Even though the quality may be the same and they are standardized so they work well with each other, when you buy an entire system together you know that the company made these products to go together. It may work fine separately, but it could be amazing when used with similar products.
