Older televisions only have a coaxial input (the plug that looks like most television cable plugs) and do not have the red, white and yellow audio/video jacks. This small piece of plastic and metal will plug into a power outlet and then allow you to plug your DVD player, video game system or other audio/video equipment into your coaxial outlet. Also if you do not have enough A/V jacks then the modulator will add another input for an additional piece of hardware. Many RF modulators will also be combined with a switcher, which allows you to plug multiple devices into the RF modulators, and then switch which one is being transmitted to your TV by a simple push button mechanism. These modulators run from under $10 to right under $30 for ones that include multiple inputs.
