Power conditioners and surge protectors run in the same family of needs for your Home Theater system. These two pieces of equipment are usually not used together because when you have one, you usually don’t need the other one. Most people see these two devices with two roles. The first reason for the purchase of a power conditioner or surge protector is to increase the number of power outlets that you have around your Home Theater system. If you have a normal Home Theater system, you will probably need power for your television, VCR, DVD player, cable outlet box, CD player, stereo receiver, and numerous other gadgets that make up your Home Theater system. Unfortunately, there are probably only two plugs in the wall for you to plug in your stuff. A power conditioner or surge protector provides 6 to 10 additional outlets for power.
The second purpose of a power conditioner or surge protector is to protect your equipment from the electricity. This sounds odd, but the normal current in most houses and businesses is about 120 volts. If there is any sort of storm or electrical disturbance, the power could surge well above that rate, putting your system into danger. The power conditioner and surge protector keep tabs on the amount of power that is coming through. If an amount larger than 120 volts comes through the wires, then it will shut down the connection to your system so that no damage is done. These two pieces of equipment could save thousands of dollars worth of equipment from being junked with one surge.
