The most important thing to know about DVD recorders is the difference between DVD burners. Most people will use the terms interchangeably when discussing home entertainment systems, but are most of the time incorrect. A DVD burner is what you have on your computer or a separate component with video editing. It has the ability to burn computer files onto a DVD disk. A DVD recorder is a standalone instrument that is used in conjunction with your TV programs. A DVD recorder is much like a VCR. You have the capability to record the TV programs that you are watching instantaneously.
A DVD recorder can come in different combinations either attached to a VCR or to a hard drive. The hard drive allows you to save TV programs on your hard drive and then at a later time record the programs onto a DVD. On many DVD recorders you also have the ability to record digital or analog video from your camcorder with the connection of a firewire cable. Though there are no editing capabilities you can still move your video files from your camcorder onto a DVD for later use. One thing to consider is that a DVD recorder does not clean up your video. If you are transferring home videos from 1987, then the DVD produced is still going to have 1987 sound and picture. It is strictly copying what you already have onto a new media storage device.
