Tornadoes, hurricanes, and other extreme windstorms are the cause of many people being injured or even killed each year. There are around 1000 tornadoes in the United States every year. These storms cause millions of dollars worth of property damage. Typically, tornadoes occur in the spring and summer months, but can occur at any time and have been known to occur in any part of the country. You will sometimes see tornadoes that are spawned by hurricanes.

As soon as a tornado touches ground, the storm’s circulation will pick up and throw all types of debris. Much of this debris can become like a flying missile to anything in its path. Most of our homes are not built to withstand this type of circulating wind. Yet, people must continue to live in the areas of the country that are at risk for tornadoes and hurricanes. We can however, do our best to protect our families at all times. Having a storm shelter on your property can help to protect your family from these sometimes deadly storms.

Before investing in a tornado shelter there are things you should take into consideration:

• Is the area in which I live at high risk for storms and high winds?
• How far from my home is the nearest safety shelter?
• What type of shelter do I need and where will I have it installed?
• What is the cost of having a storm shelter?

Many families who live in areas considered at low risk for these types of winds and storms still want tornado shelters. You must consider what safety precautions you need to take for you and your family to have peace of mind.

The cost of a shelter will vary depending on several factors:

• Size of the shelter
• Location of the Shelter
• Type of foundation your house is built on
• Is the shelter is being built in an existing home or a home being newly built?
