» How do I use a storm shelter?
You should equip your storm shelter so that, in the event of an emergency, you only need to get inside. With this in mind, stock your shelter with emergency supplies including several gallons of water, energy food such as granola bars, a battery-powered radio, a toilet bucket, flashlight, blankets, and a first-aid kit. In addition, think about any other items you might want to remember to grab on your way to the shelter. If you have time, you might want to take a cell phone or important documents and/or a family keepsake with you to the shelter, but don’t waste time in an emergency trying to take everything
Maintain a clear path to your storm shelter, and make sure everyone in your family knows how to get there and get in by themselves. Consider running an emergency drill, and try using a cell phone from inside the shelter to determine if you will have communication once you are inside.
If you live in an area with frequent tornadoes and/or hurricanes, watch for warnings, and go the shelter immediately if there is a disaster warning in your area. If at all possible, offer shelter to friends and neighbors as well. Stay in the shelter until you are confident that the danger has passed.
