There should be a smoke alarm on every floor of your home including the basement. It is advisable to have one outside of every bedroom. On floors without bedrooms it is recommended that you install alarms in or near living areas such as they family room.
In many states, AC wiring is now required for new home construction so that smoke detectors are connected to the house wiring and to each other. With interconnected alarms on each floor, all smoke alarms will sound when one detects fire or smoke.
If you are having a lot of false alarms check to see if your alarm is installed in the path of steam coming from your bathroom or kitchen stove. Try moving the alarm to a better location.
