» Maintenance of Smoke Alarms
Smoke detectors are no help at all if they do not work properly. It is imperative that you keep your smoke alarms in good condition.
· Testing – No matter what type of smoke alarm you have purchased it must be tested. It is recommended that you test your alarms once a month to be sure they are operating correctly. Test your alarm by pushing the test button and listening for the alarm.
· Replacing Batteries – It is suggested that you replace the batteries each time you change your clock for daylight savings time. If your alarm chirps it is alerting you that your battery needs to be replaced. When moving into a new home, immediately replace the batteries in all smoke alarms.
· Cleaning – Cleaning your alarm will help to keep it working properly. Using your vacuum cleaner hose attachment you can clean dust and cobwebs from the alarms. If you are going to be doing work near a smoke alarm that could send dust into the air be sure to cover the alarm with a shield. Never paint on the alarm.
· Smoke alarms should be replaced at least every ten years.
