» How to Install Smoke Alarms
Always follow the manufacturers instructions when installing a smoke alarm. In most cases, smoke alarms can be installed with a simple screwdriver. Many brands are self-adhesive and will automatically stick to the wall or ceiling where they are placed.
A professional electrician should install smoke alarms that are hard-wired into your home electrical system. If your alarm plugs into a wall socket, make sure it has a restraining device to keep its plug from being accidentally pulled loose. Never connect a detector to a circuit that could be turned off at a wall switch.
Since smoke rises, alarms should be on the ceiling at least four inches from the nearest wall, or placed high on a wall four to twelve inches from the ceiling. It is not recommended that you install an alarm near a window, door or fireplace as drafts can detour smoke away from the alarm unit. In a room where the ceilings are extremely high, mount the detector at or near the ceiling’s highest point.
