Employers hire different types of security guards based on their (the employer’s) needs and preferences. Some employers hire one security guard while others hire hundreds or even thousands. There are, however, a few basic foundational differences among security guards.

Personal Security vs. Corporate Security: Personal security guards are often called “bodyguards” rather than security guards because their preeminent concern is the physical safety of their employer. In all likelihood, they shadow the activities of their employer, watching for any sign of danger. On the other hand, corporate security guards protect property as well as individual persons.
Private Security Guards vs. Government Security Guards: The vast majority of security guards are employed by private employers, but the Transportation Security Administration, as well as other government agencies, also employs security guards. Government security guards protect government buildings and property, as well as the safety of all citizens.
Static Security Guards vs. Mobile Security Guards: Static security guards stay in a single post throughout their work shift, often watching security cameras or manning a gate. Mobile security guards, on the other hand, walk or drive through their work site to remain visible and inspect it for security threats.

Some businesses and individuals hire their own security guards, but others outsource their security needs using private security companies. In either case, security is not a lucrative field, so many security guards have a second job. Off duty policeman are among many people who serve as security guards in order to make extra money.
