Security cameras protect both your home and your family. The FBI reports that thirty-eight percent of assaults occur during home invasions, so if you can prevent home invasions, you are protecting your family.

Security cameras can help to both deter and apprehend thieves. Posted signs that indicate a home is watched via security cameras might serve to deter would-be burglars. If you are still robbed, however, security cameras can help you catch the thief and recover your valuables.

Increasingly, it seems that families are also using cameras to watch what happens inside their homes. Counter Spy Shops, which sells the so-called “nanny cams,” reported a twenty-five percent increase in camera sales over the past five years. Individuals use these cameras to watch babysitters or domestic employees at work inside their homes. While these cameras are legal (though they cannot include audio surveillance) they do indicate a lack of trust in your employees, so be careful not to cross the fine line between protecting your home and becoming needlessly paranoid.

Regardless of your purpose in using security cameras in your home, consider carefully what kind of camera you want. You can purchase cameras designed specifically for outdoor and/or indoor use, or cameras designed for use in low light. If your main concern is security, place cameras conspicuously near gates and doors, while if you want to watch what happens inside your home, aim cameras at doorways and areas where you store valuables.
