» How should I build a safe room?
Safe rooms can be built as part of a building’s original construction, added on to an existing structure, or, in some cases, adapted from an existing room. In any case, however, it is a complicated job, so unless you are a contractor, you should not plan on building the safe room yourself.
Begin the project by determining your goals and obtaining expert advice. If you are concerned over the possibility of a home invasion, have a security consultant analyze your need for a safe room. On the other hand, if your concern is natural disasters, contact a storm shelter manufacturer or a weather agency for advice.
Once you have determined your specific needs for a safe room, hire an architect and/or a contractor. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) gives out free plans for a safe room, so use its plans or purchase plans from another quality source. You should also obtain adequate building permits and inspections if these items are necessary in your area; contact your city’s building commission for clarification on what exact items you need.
Next, in conjunction with your builders, decide the location of your safe room. Unless biochemical dangers are your concern, put the safe room in a windowless area in the basement or on the ground floor. If it is at all possible, make your safe room multifunctional; use it as a walk-in closet, bathroom, or storage space so that it doesn’t sit empty year round. In any case, make sure your safe room is accessible; you want to be able to get there quickly and easily in an emergency.
Hopefully, once you pick the location and help in the design, the bulk of your work will be finished. The contractor will need to reinforce the walls and the ceilings, as well as outfit the room with ventilation and electricity as needed. All you need to do is monitor the project.
