How Does a Motion Detector Work?

Whether motion detectors are being used to deter home invasion or to light an area for a homeowner’s safety there are two primary types. Both types can be used indoors or outdoors.

• Infrared Sensors – Responds to changes in infrared heat within a certain range. This change occurs when a human or an animal enters the area.

• Ultrasonic Sensors – Responds when the motion detector senses a change in the ultrasonic frequencies within a certain range. The only way that an ultrasonic sensor is triggered is by movement in the area. This movement may be by a human, pet or vehicle in the area.
