As stated earlier, many homeowners wait until after an incident to take security precautions. The following are good safety tips for homeowners to keep in mind:
• Teach children to never let strangers into your home.
• Get good quality locks for all of your doors. All key locks need to be supplemented with dead bolt locks.
• If you are going to be gone on vacation it is a good idea to get a trusted friend to house sit. If this is not possible, at least have a neighbor keep an eye on your home. The following are other considerations when going on vacation:
o Have a neighbor pick up your newspaper and mail each day.
o Use timers to turn lights on and off so that it will look like someone is at home.
o Keeps curtains open so that the house will look normal.
o If possible, leave a car in the driveway.
o If leaving a car in the driveway, be sure you have removed the remote for your garage door.
• Display a sign that states that you have a security alarm system and that it is being monitored.
• Hide anything a burglar could use to stand or climb on.
• Keep shrubbery trimmed so that intruders can be seen.
• Have locks installed on your fuse box and any outside power sources.
• Educate family members on safety precautions.
