A security system has a control panel that is normally located in a closet out of sight. This control system essentially operates the system by sensors that connect to the control panel from other locations throughout your house. If you have your system armed and the sensors detect a problem they send a signal to the control panel. If you have your system monitored, the security company is then notified.

By an entry door you will have your keypad that arms and disarms your system. When you enter and leave your home you will enter a code that arms and disarms the security system. A digital display shows whether your system is activated or deactivated. You can have additional keypads set up in other locations throughout your home. It might be a good idea to have them by all doors and one by the master bedroom.

Magnetic contacts will be placed in your windows and doors. They are at two-part device. One part is a switch that is placed in the window frames or door jams and the other is a magnet that is installed in the window or door. The alarm is activated when a window or door is opened.

A passive infrared motion detector is the device that senses motion or body heat in the controlled area.

Glassbreak sensors use the sound and feel of breaking glass to trigger the system. These sensors will normally be placed on the wall or ceiling. When the noise is detected an alarm will be triggered that will hopefully frighten away an intruder.
