A gun safe is the most secure to place to store your firearms, but there are alternatives as well as additional methods you can take to secure your guns.
• Carrying Cases: Soft and hard carrying cases protect your firearms as you travel or carry them on a hunting trip. Soft cases, on the other hand, are made of canvas, vinyl, Cordura nylon, or leather and often have flannel, fleece or foam padding on the interior. Hard cases, on the other hand, are made of plastic or aluminum and can be FAA approved for long-distance travel. Whichever kind of case you have, make sure you lock the case to protect your guns as you carry them.
• Gun Cabinet: A gun cabinet is one step down in security from a gun safe. Cabinets serve to store and display your firearms, but without the thick steel coating, they are not as strong of a deterrent to both thieves and children as is a safe.
• Trigger Locks and Cable Locks: Trigger locks or the more effective cable locks should always be used to keep firearms from accidentally discharging.
• Outside Storage Facilities: Gun clubs and/or private facilities often offer safe facilities where you can secure your guns indefinitely for a small membership free. Contact your local gun club or the National Rifle Association (NRA) for suggestions.
Make sure that your guns are stored securely and that you comply with all local, state, and federal laws regarding firearms. It may be a small hassle to secure your guns, but it is a hassle that could save lives.
