If you want a flashlight for general use, including help finding your way in the dark or safety during a power outage, you should be able to find a quality option for about ten dollars. On the other hand, if you need an especially powerful or fancy flashlight, you might end up spending close to two hundred dollars. It all depends on your purpose for your flashlight.

If you want a flashlight to take camping, look for a lightweight but powerful flashlight that you can carry easily but also gives you substantial light in a dark forest. On the other hand, if you only want a small light that won’t wake anyone up or that you could use to find the keyhole in your car door, purchase a flashlight that you can put on your keychain. Purchase a headlamp or a lantern if you want to read in the dark or light up a room, respectively, but if you just want a flashlight to keep around the house for general use, look for a quality tube flashlight.

Quality flashlights are, first and foremost, durable. Look for flashlights that you can drop without destroying them. Aluminum flashlights are more durable than plastic flashlights, but they are also more expensive than plastic. Some flashlights advertise that they are scratch or corrosion resistant or waterproof; these features are generally not necessary, but they may indicate general durability. Durable flashlights also often have a warranty.

In addition, look for a flashlight with a bright, energy-efficient beam, and when in doubt, choose a brighter beam rather than a dimmer beam. Energy-efficient light bulbs can save you money in battery expenses, so if you can determine whether a flashlight is energy-efficient, choose it. You may also want to consider an adjustable beam; this feature may cost more, but it can be helpful to switch between bright light and dim light and/or between area lighting and focused light.
