Taking each of the following steps at the right time will put you on the road to bathroom remodeling success.

Compile a folder of ideas.

List your needs and wants – prioritizing each.

Determine whether you will use the existing floor plan, rearrange or expand it. Expansion can include adding addition space or using the space from an adjoining linen or bedroom closet.

Look for professional help from architects, general contractors, design/build firms, bathroom designers, and home improvement centers whether you are adding a new bath or expanding an existing bath. Meet with them to discuss your design, possible costs, and potential construction time frames.

Create a drawing of your design on graph paper.

Decide what work you will do (if any) and what you'll hire a contractor to do.

Establish a practical budget.

Decide how to finance your bathroom remodeling project.

Select the bathtub. Type: standard or whirlpool, material: metal, cast iron, fiberglass, or acrylic and color. Note that whirlpool tubs usually require extra floor space.

Select the toilet. Style: one or two-piece, bowl: round or elongated, and flush: pressurized or gravity-fed.

Select the sink, pedestal, under mount, basic solid-surfacing unit, above mount, etc.

Select faucets and fittings. Popular options include brass, brushed nickel, and chrome.
