» Wine Cellars Overview
Why have a wine cellar? Like any other perishable food wine can spoil. However, if the wine is kept in a controlled room at the right temperature not only does it keep better but it also actually assists in the aroma and taste of the wine.
Wine cellars are fantastic keepers of history. So many times for special occasions or as gifts people give and receive bottles of wine. Wine cellars can be great extensions of the kitchen and an excellent way to preserve the memories of life.
The French used to keep wines in shallow caves. The caves provided ideal temperatures for aging and storing. The most ideal temperature to store or age wine is 57 degrees Fahrenheit. Many people think that wine cellars are only necessary for extremely wealthy people who can afford high priced bottles of wine. This is completely false. Any kind (or price) of wine ages, whether it is a $10 bottle to a $400 bottle.
Not only does the temperature of the wine cellar make a difference in storage but humidity plays a role as well. It is important to maintain at least 50% humidity in the wine cellar. If the cellar is kept too dry then the chances of the cork drying out is great. On the flip side, if the cellar retains too much moisture then it is possible for mold to form. Central to the wine cellar is the cooling unit. The unit operates with a thermostat that regulates the average temperature of the cellar.
There are many options in regards to building or installing wine cellars. Understanding the need for and the benefits from having a wine cellar are the first steps a homeowner must take before taking the plunge.
