1. Keep track of all the contents of your move by labeling every box with its specific contents. Designate a number for every room in your new house, and label each box with the corresponding number. When you get to your destination, label each room with its number so the movers know where to put each box and furniture item.
2. Ensure that removable furniture parts (cushions, throw pillows, covers, etc.) are either attached to the furniture piece or packed in a marked box.
3. Do not overload boxes with heavy items. Use small, sturdy boxes for books and other heavy items.
4. Carefully wrap and cushion all breakables.
5. Use wardrobe boxes, which most moving companies can provide, to pack hanging clothes. Many companies will allow you to sell back used boxes after your move for a full or partial refund.
6. Take moving as an opportunity to purge. As you sort through items and pack, create piles for items to be donated to local charities. Ask yourself whether this is something you use (or wear) on a regular basis and whether you will use it in your new house. You will be glad you did when it comes time to unpack all these items in your new house.
7. Even if you are packing your own items, consider having the moving company pack your fragile items. Then you are assured they will be covered for breakage or damage.
