There are many professional organization businesses that will come in and take care of your project from start to finish. You can have your entire organization system built right into your garage. Many companies will make recommendations and help you select a complete storage system that meets your needs and then install it for you. This of course comes at a price, but if time is a more valuable commodity to you then this is an option you may want to consider.

You can also add a garage organization system that can be purchased at home improvement and hardware stores. There are many to choose from and once you have assessed your belongings and your space you will find it easier to select a system that works for you. If you choose to purchase a do-it-yourself system, be sure that you have your measurements ready when you go to the store. Purchase the necessary accessories based on how much you own and how you want it stored. The benefit of doing it yourself is that you'll know how to make adjustments when needed in the future. You might want to consider planning out your space into specific areas with related items together for easy access. For example, a sports equipment area, a home repair area, auto supplies area, seasonal storage area, etc.

Whether you choose to install a do-it-yourself garage organization system or not, there are many storage pieces available that will help you get organized. The key is to make good use of the all the space in the garage. The following is a list of items that can be used to help you get organized:

• standing cabinet with adjustable shelves works well for storing various sized items – consider something that locks to store poisonous materials out of the reach of children

• open, adjustable shelves for frequently used and bulkier items

• hamper-style organizer for sports equipment like bats and balls

• small tier shelves keep messy shoes outside and out of the way

• durable rubber trash can or a storage unit that will keep everything straight for long-handled items such as rakes and shovels

• inexpensive hooks - large deep hooks are perfect for hanging a ladder and bikes while smaller hooks can keep your work bench neat and tidy on a wallboard or peg rack

• drawer units for miscellaneous hardware and utility items

• clear plastic bins for storage of seasonal or frequently used items
