One of the basic rules for any organization project is that there is more than one way to organize anything—there is no right or wrong way to do it. Good organization is about creating a system that works for you and sticking with it. By planning ahead you will be able to establish the needs, design the space and select the accessories needed for a well-organized garage without a huge financial investment.
The first step in garage organization is to determine the size of the space you have to work with. Whether you plan to hang things up, shelve them, or put them in a drawer, your available storage space and what you plan to store in the garage must first be assessed. Once you have determined how much room the car will take up and have measured the extra space you have to work with in the garage, ask yourself the following questions:
• How much shelf space is needed?
• How much hanging space is needed?
• Do you need shorter or longer hanging spaces?
• How much drawer space is needed?
• How much floor space is needed?
Ask yourself what works and doesn't work about the current set-up. Make a list of necessary items that you would like better access to. You will then need to determine what will be stored in the open and what you would like to be stored out of sight. Be sure to consider what might need to be stored out of the reach of small children too.
