Before installing drywall, there are several things that need to be taken care of. A mechanical inspection should be done to make sure all your work complies with building codes. If you are doing new construction, the windows and exterior doors need to be installed first. You also need to make sure the temperature remains at a minimum of 55 degrees for 48 hours before and after the completion of the job. You also need to make sure that all your joists and studs are straight, secure, and properly spaced. Check to see that the proper insulation and vapor barriers are in place and that you have nailed metal plates over any pieces of wood that pipes or cables run through. This will keep you from puncturing the pipes and cables.

When estimating the amount of supplies to buy, consider that for every 1,000 feet of drywall ordered you will also need: 370 feet of joint tape, 140 pounds of ready-mixed joint compound, 700 screws, and 700 nails.
