Whenever possible, use full sheets of drywall. When cutting a piece for length, cut it so that the end falls in the center of the joist or stud. Use a T-square to measure, then score the drywall with a utility knife and snap it back. Cut through the remaining paper with a utility knife.

When cutting along the length, you can use a chalk line or an 8’ straight edge to measure, and then score the line with a utility knife.

To cut inside corners, cut one side with a drywall saw, then score the other side with a utility knife and snap it back.

If you are cutting for round light fixtures, measure from the edge of where the drywall sheets will go to the center of the circle. Transfer these measurements to your drywall and use them to center your circle cutter. Score the circle cutter several times, and then tap it out with a hammer.

When cutting around switch and outlet boxes, measure from the side edge of where the sheet will go to the right and left sides of the box. Then measure from the top edge to the top and bottom of the box. Transfer these measurements to the sheet of drywall and cut it with a keyhole saw.
