Stacey and Sam had been married for five years and were living in a one bedroom home. There home was perfect for them, until Stacey discovered that she was pregnant. All of a sudden, that one bedroom house just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. After looking all over town, Sam and Stacey decided that they would build their own home. However, they faced a dilemma that many people face today: Should they be the contractors of their own home or hire someone else to do it?

There are many pros and cons to being your own contractor. First, let’s look at the benefits. The most obvious benefit would probably be the fact that when you are the contractor, you are in control. You can choose your own subcontractors, control the timeline of the project, and have things the way you want them. Another benefit is that being your own contractor saves money. If you want to build a home on a budget, this might be the right plan for you.

However, there are also some cons to becoming your own contractor. When you become a contractor…you are in control! I know that this was listed as a pro, but the payment for getting to do everything your own way is that you have to do everything! This includes hiring the right people, choosing the right sites, and possibly doing some of the building yourself. Also, being your own contractor can be very time consuming. It takes many hard working hours to get a house built, and you would be involved in every step of the way.

All in all, whether or not you choose to be your own contractor is something that you and your family will need to decide together. Either way, be prepared for the journey that building your own home has to offer!
