From Menlo Park, Calif., to Brooklyn, N.Y., small-business owners are relying on their creativity to create niche products for a discerning market and often use recycled and natural materials in the process.

Start-up small businesses specialize in designing and manufacturing unique and stylish home furnishings - from a plush rug with a Down East twist, to lamps made out of antlers, and end tables made of scraps from a Steinway piano factory.
