The world of home appliances just got a whole lot more interesting.
The U.S. Justice Department's antitrust division just approved Whirlpool's purchase of rival company Maytag, a - get this - $1.7 billion dollar deal that will create the largest home appliance company on the planet.
In spite of the gigantic share the two companies would dominate as one, government lawyers concluded that the deal was not likely to reduce competition among other manufacturers...at least substantially. I mean, come on. At least there's still General Electric and Frigidaire, right?
Somehow that's not as comforting as I wanted it to be.
