Companies differ in their approaches to coordinating all the details of managing a healthcare facility. In short, some rely on good people as managers; others rely on good equipment and software, while there are certainly companies that utilize the best of both. Companies that rely on efficient managers will train their own person and then place him or her in the healthcare facility as the overall coordinator. He or she is responsible to train and develop managers in each level and department of the healthcare facility. In this system, there is huge emphasis on teamwork and ongoing development of people as both high and low level managers. Other companies have developed technology to help obtain and coordinate all sorts of data associated with managing the facilities: this would include keeping work orders and scheduled maintenance needs addressed and performed, organizing efficient patient transport, having clinical equipment ready and available when needed, and so forth. The idea here is that the coordination is more of an information technology endeavor than a “people as managers ” one. Other companies are finding unique and creative ways to blend the “personal touch” and the personal computer in managing healthcare facilities. Regardless of a company’s approach, today, the market is continually changing as consumers have more and more influence on how they would like their hospital stay to be like.
