When choosing an assisted living facility you want to know your loved ones are safe and secure in their new home. Consider the following safety issues when considering a facility?

• Are there intercoms installed in each room of the unit?
• Is there a 24-hour emergency response system available from each unit in the facility?
• Is the floor plan easy to follow?
• Are doorways, hallways, and rooms large enough to safely accommodate wheelchairs?
• Are elevators available for those who cannot use the stairs?
• Are handrails available to aid in walking?
• Is there proper lighting?
• Are there emergency pull cords and door alarms in the units?
• Are floors non-skid and carpets easy for the elderly to walk on?
• Are there sprinklers and are exits clearly marked?
• Are there lockable doors to each unit?
• Are cupboards and shelves easy for residents to reach without falling?
• Is there adequate heating and air conditioning?
• How many staff members are on duty for each shift and how long does it take for them to respond to residents needs?
• How close is the nearest hospital?
