Paying for an Assisted Living Facility

Costs vary depending on the size of the apartment, and types of services offered and needed by residents. Assisted living is less expensive than home health care or nursing facilities. The basic rate of assisted living may cover all expenses or there may be additional charges for special required services.
Generally, assisted living facilities charge on a month-to-month basis but may require long-term arrangements. Some health plans or long-term care insurance policies may cover some of the expense. There are also financial assistance programs available at some assisted living facilities and state and government assistance may be available.

Keep the following items in mind when dealing with the financial aspect of assisted living:

• Is there a contractual agreement available that covers health-care services and fees, and admission and discharge provisions?
• What are the policies for transfers and refunds?
• What are the monthly costs of the facility?
• What services are included in the monthly costs and what must be paid for separately?
• What type of rate increases have they incurred over the past few years?
• Is a deposit required and is it refundable?
• What is the availability for residents to receive additional health care as their needs change? What are the costs for these additional services?
• What are the payment, billing, and insurance filing policies?
• Are there any government, private, or corporate programs available to assist in the cost of services?
