Day Six: Diamond Head Crater

Hike to the Summit of Diamond Head Crater, the most famous volcanic crater in the world. This crater overlooks the Pacific Ocean on the South-east Coast of Oahu at the end of Waikiki. The crater has been extinct for 150,000 years and is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit. It was originally called Laeahi, “brow of the tuna”, by the ancient Hawaiians, and the resemblance can be seen by looking at the silhouette of the crater from Waikiki.

The hike to the Summit of Diamond Head Crater is classified as easy to moderate, and is definitely well-worth the climb. The view is breathtaking as the entire west side of the island, from Waikiki to Koki Head, can be observed. This hike is best done in the morning as there is no shade on the trail; bring water and a flashlight (for the tunnel). The trail typically takes about 1 ½ hours as it is 1 ¾ miles to the rim.

In the afternoon, visit the Waikiki Aquarium located on the shores of Waikiki. As the third oldest aquarium in the U.S., founded in 1904, it focuses on the aquatic life of the tropical Pacific. There are over 2,500 organisms on exhibit at the aquarium. The Waikiki Aquarium is most known for its coral reef exhibit that allows visitors to view reef sharks, sea jellies, and living coral up close.
