Hawaii has always been associated with food, ever since Captain Cook named the Islands as a sign of honor to his patron, the Earl of Sandwich.   Many ethnic groups have immigrated to Hawaii in the last 200 years, and with them they brought their cook pots. Hawaii is home to some of the most fragrant aromas on earth. 
 
Dining out in Hawaii is a unique experience as you drink in the melting pot of cultures that constitute the peoples of the Islands. The tongue has so much to choose from with Hawaii’s multi-ethnic convergence of cuisines. One never need be in want for a good meal while in Hawaii. 
 
Each of the Islands has much to offer with a variety of food choices. American, Asian, Hawaiian, and even North African restaurants are available depending on your choice. Below is a list, according to Island, of great places to eat.
 
Restaurants on the Big Island
 
If you like American, try the Shaka Restaurant found in the Kau District on Big Island. Shaka is known as “The Southern Most Bar and Restaurant in the USA.” Its features include fresh fish, American foods, home made dressings and sauces, and tropical cheese cakes. Prices on the dinner menu range from $9.00 to $21.00 a plate.
 
If you want a taste of the state itself, try a delicious Hawaiian dish at the Bamboo Restaurant. Bamboo was voted the “Best Restaurant on the Big Island” by the Hawaii Island Journal, and it was also the recipient of the prestigious Hale Aina Award in 2004. The atmosphere of Bamboo boasts a historic, flower filled tropical dining room with fresh island-style Hawaiian Regional Cuisine. Located just 30 minutes from the Kohala Coast Resorts in Historic Hawi Town, Bamboo allows you to experience real Hawaiian food fromKohala Cordon Bleu to Hawaii Thai.
 
If Latin American is your flair, try Senor Billy’s, in the South Kona District,where you will find great Baja Mexican food at reasonable prices. Or, try Adriana’s Mexican Food in the Kau District. This restaurant boasts a cook from El Salvador, and serves amazing tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and chili relleno.
 
Restaurants on Lanai
 
At the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay there is a wonderful place to get European food. Ihilani is an award-winning restaurant that features the freshest fish, fruits, and vegetables. Focusing on French Mediterranean cuisine, Ihilani unites culinary influences from around the world.
 
If you are in the mood for some Pacific Rim seafood, try Hulopoe Courtat the Four Seasons Resort Lanai.  Hulopoe Court is known for their kiawe-smoked salmon. In addition, the restaurant boasts a spectacular ocean view.
 
Restaurants on Oahu
 
The island of Oahu has many Hawaiian restaurants to choose from. One of the most popular, Alan Wong’s Restaurant, includes a famous local chef who was one of the originators of Hawaii Regional cuisine. Although the prices are steep, you will not be disappointed with this national multi-award winning restaurant found in the heart of Honolulu. 
 
If North African food is your desire, try the Moroccan restaurant, Casablanca. The atmosphere found here is hard to beat, while the prices are fairly reasonable. All of the classics are served: lamb tagines, couscous, Moroccan chicken, and much more.
 
Restaurants on Molokai
 
Hula Shores at Hotel Molokai provides great American food for hungry tourists. They are known for their coconut shrimp and nightly entertainment. Enjoy the ocean while eating seafood, steak, or prime rib. 
 
A favorite restaurant with locals and visitors is Kamuela’s Cookhouse found in Central Molokai. Specializing in Hawaiian food, this restaurant is family owned with friendly service. The price of food is very reasonable and the atmosphere has a very fun flair.
 
Restaurants on Maui
 
One of the best places to find Mediterranean food in Hawaii is Longhi’s, located on the Islands of Maui and Oahu. As one of the most popular and acclaimed restaurants in Hawaii, the prices are high but the food and service are great. Enjoy the wonderful atmosphere as you eat some of the best Mediterranean food on the island.
 
There is even Cuban food to be found at Manana Garage. Found in Central Maui, it is the exclusive center for Cuban Nuevo Latino food in the island. Prices are fairly high but the ambiance is as rockin’ as the salsa in your mouth.  
 
Restaurants on Kauai
 
One of the most favorite restaurants on Kauai is the Barbecue Inn, a much loved spot of locals and visitors since 1940. If you are looking for value, this is the place to stop. Enjoy the Formica atmosphere with over 30 entrees to choose from. 
 
If authentic Hawaiian ambiance is what you want, Tidepools is the place for you. Located at the Hyatt Regency Kauai Resort on the South Shore, enjoy a magnificent setting of thatched huts situated among flowing waterfalls and koi fish lagoons. Although the restaurant is expensive, the contemporary Hawaiian Regional cuisine is rich in the taste of the culture and traditions of the Islands.
