The following are some terms that may be helpful when learning about PDAs:
• Backlighting - A function that allows the display to glow from behind making it easier to read in the dark.
• Beam - The transmitting of information between two PDAs by way of the IR (infrared) port. Data can also be beamed to a printer.
• BlackBerry - A wireless PDA that features e-mail, web browsing, a mobile telephone, and text messaging among other wireless services.
• Bluetooth - A short range wireless connection that allows the exchange of data from your PDA to your mobile telephone, computer, or printer.
• Cradle - Also known as a docking station, a cradle is the device that the PDA sits in when synchronizing data between the PDA and a desktop computer. The cradle can also be used to recharge the batteries for the PDA.
• Hack - A software application used to add functionality to the PDA.
• Hot sync - A method performed through Infrared, serial, wireless, or USB in which the data is exchanged between the PDA and your computer.
• IR Port - A sensor that allows you to beam or exchange data between two PDAs.
• MMC - A Multi Media Card, which is a very small memory card that by using flash memory creates portable storage in PDAs.
• OS - Also known as Palm OS, this is the software that allows programs to run on a PDA.
• Palm - An operating system for PDAs or PDA hardware created by Palm Incorporated.
• PIM - An abbreviation for Personal Information System which is an application that organizes personal information on the PDA such as task lists, address books, and calendars.
• Pocket PC - A Windows based operating system created by Microsoft.
• .PRC File - An uncompressed Palm application file that can be installed from your desktop computer to your PDA during the synchronizing process.
• RAM - An abbreviation for Random Access Memory which is the temporary storage of PDA files.
• RIM - A company called Research In Motion that created the BlackBerry.
• ROM - Read Only Memory, the space where the operating system is stored.
• Smartphone - A mobile phone and a PDA combined.
• Stylus - A pointing device that is much like a pen. The stylus is used to point to data on the screen or to write directly to the screen.
• USB - The Universal System Bus, which is the device that connects the PDA to a computer.
• WAP - Wireless Application Protocol used for transmitting data from internet browsers to the PDA.
