Buying a cell phone and deciding on a service plan can be a bit confusing if you are not informed before you go into a cell phone service company. It is important that you have some idea of what you need before talking with a sales representative. Otherwise, you may be talked into spending more on a plan than is necessary. Determine how much you will be using the phone and what time of the day or night you would most likely be making calls. This will help you to determine the number of minutes per month you need to have available on your plan and whether you need a plan with free nights and weekends and what time you need the night hours to begin.

It is recommended that unless you plan to use your phone only for emergencies you get at least 150 anytime minutes on your plan. Be aware, many people plan to only use their phones for emergencies and end up using many more minutes per month than expected. The minute you place a call, the minute count begins. If you go over the minutes allowed on your plan, you will be billed at what can be a very high rate for the overage minutes used. Most wireless plans charge you for the calls you make and the calls you receive. Very few companies will carry over your unused minutes, so it is important that you are able to give a good estimate of the monthly minutes you will use.

It is important that you select a service that does not charge roaming fees in the area you will be mostly using your cell phone. Your phone is considered to be roaming when you make or receive a call outside of your local call area. When you are roaming, you will be charged a roaming fee in addition to the charge for the minutes you use for each call. Some plans include long-distance charges in your rate plan. Be sure you understand what your plan does and does not include before signing a contract. Most service companies will ask you to sign a two-year contract.
