The biggest sport in Guyana is without a doubt, Cricket. Cricket, which is typically unknown to us in the United States, is played throughout the world in countries like Great Britain and India. Guyana plays first class cricket as a part of the West Indies Cricket Team and competes against other Caribbean countries. The sport is so big in Guyana that they were chosen to host the 2007 ICC World Cup at the almost completed Providence Stadium. Football, or soccer as Americans call it, is also popular in the country.

In keeping with its island culture, reggae is a popular type of music heard in Guyana. The Indian cultures have also influenced Guyanese music, although you will also hear music popular in Europe and the U.S. in many of Georgetown’s nightclubs.
