As small and sometimes unrecognized as Guyana is, they have produced some wonderful literature famous in and outside of the country. Popular Guyanese authors include Jan Care, Denis Williams, and ER Braithwaite, whose memoir, “To Sir, With Love” relates his experiences as a black man teaching in a mostly white area of London. A popular writer known outside of Guyana is Edgar Mittelholzer whose novels include “Corentyne Thunder” and The Kaywana Trilogy, a story about a Guyanese family through 350 years of history.
Art in Guyana focuses mainly on the Amerindians and their culture. One of the most famous Guyanese artists, Aubrey Williams, paints in Timehri motifs that are derived from Amerindian rock paintings. His work can be viewed in a mural that is located on the outside wall of the V.I.P. lounge in the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. Other important artists are Philip Moore, Ronald Savory, and Stanley Greaves.
