The people and government of Guyana believe that adequate education is the way to creating a higher standard of living for all the Guyanese citizens and that is why they provide free public education for children starting at three years of age. Preschool or nursery school is available for a two year, early childhood program. It is not mandatory that you send your child to preschool, but it is an option for those who choose to do so. Primary or Elementary school begins for children starting at five years of age. A typical school day is five hours long and the school year is made up of about 190 days. Primary education consists of a six year program where upon passing an entrance exam, students are allowed to proceed into Secondary or High School. There are three different high school programs that students can attend based on their scores from the entrance exam. The Community High School, Multi-lateral High School, and General Secondary School focus students into areas and interests that will allow them to reach their highest level of success. As in the United States, tuition fees are required to attend universities such as the University of Guyana that offers Bachelor and Master degrees.
