Guyana’s economy is mainly made up of four products, bauxite, gold, sugar, and rice. These four products account for most of Guyana’s exports and employment. Aside from these, Guyana has some other natural resources that are becoming an integral part of its economy.
• Forestry: The vast forest areas of the interior regions have been productive for the use of furniture and fuel making, ply-wood production, and general construction.
• Fishing: Shrimp has been an important and profitable part of the fishing industry off the Atlantic Coast.
• Tourism: Guyana is in the newborn stages of promoting tourism within the country, but as people look for more eco-friendly travel, Guyana’s natural wonders and pristine rain forests are sure to drawn in adventurous vacationers from around the world.
• Energy: As Guyana heads into the future, one of the most promising economic factors is the use of hydroelectricity. In the late 1980s, Guyana installed thermal facilities that are able to produce up to 385 million kilowatt hours annually.
Throughout the years, Guyana has survived a fascinating history, overcome tumultuous political issues and all while maintained an ever promising economy that will have the country growing and maturing in the future.
