Guyana can also be divided into ten political or administrative regions or divisions. They are as follows:

• Barima-Waini, located in the northwest portion of the country, is full of dense forest and therefore is sparsely populated with about 24,000 people.
• Pomeroon-Supenaam is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and has a population around 49,000.
• Essequibo Islands/West Demerara is also bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the north and split into two sections by the Essequibo River. The region includes the islands found at the mouth of the river and the town of Parika. The population is about 103,000 people.
• Demerara-Mahaica, one of the smallest regions, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and holds Guyana’s capital of Georgetown. It’s has an estimated population of 410,000.
• East Berbice-Corentyne takes up the eastern strip of Guyana’s border with Suriname. The borderline is formed by the Corentyne River. New Amsterdam is one of the main towns in the region and it has a total population of around 124,000 people.
• Mahaica-Berbice is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the north, the Mahaica River on the west and the Berbice River on the east, hence the region’s name. The population is estimated at 52,000.
• Cuyuni-Mazaruni is located in the lower northwest section of the country under the Barima-Waini region. The capital is Bartica and it has a population around 17,500.
• Potaro-Siparuni is located in the central portion of the nation and has an extremely small population of only 10,000 people.
• Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo is found in the southern most area of the country. Within this region lies the Rupununi savannah. It has a small population of about 19,000 people.
• Upper Demerara Berbice is in the interior part of Guyana with the small coastal regions bordering in the north and the strip like region bordering in the east. It contains Guyana’s second largest city, Linden and has an overall population of about 41,000 people.
