Although Georgetown is the capital and in many ways the most notable and important city, there are several other towns in Guyana worth mentioning such as New Amsterdam, Linden, and Parika.
• New Amsterdam: New Amsterdam can be found in the East Berbice-Corentyne region and is one of the largest towns in Guyana with a population of about 33,000. It is only some 60 miles away from Georgetown and 4 miles from the Atlantic Ocean. The town was built in 1740 by the Dutch and was first named Fort Sint Andries. New Amsterdam is now an important port town in Guyana and has been designated as a National Heritage Site.
• Linden: Linden has an estimated population of 60,000 people making it the second largest town in Guyana. It is the capital of the Upper Demerara-Berbice region and sits on the Demerara River. Linden was recognized as a town in 1970 and is known for its many bauxite mines.
• Parika: Parika is another important port town located in the region of Essequibo Islands-West Demerara. The town is a common stop for many local taxis and busses and it has a ferry service that will take you to and from the Essequibo Islands.
Guyana has many attractive features from its various geographic regions filled with mountains, waterfalls, coastlines, rivers, savannahs and rainforests, to the interesting history and designs of its port towns and capital, Georgetown. On average Guyana is about the size of the state of Idaho or the country of Great Britain, but as the old saying goes, “good things come in small packages”.
