If you plan to head out into the interior of Guyana for sightseeing it is recommended that you first stop by the Guyana Zoo in Georgetown so you can see for yourself what some of the more exotic animals of the area look like. The zoo opened to the public in 1952 although animals such as the manatee had previously been housed on the property. Zoo officials report that approximately 10,000 people visit the zoo every month! Some of the more exotic species you might encounter include the jaguar, puma, saki and capuchin monkeys, toucans, anacondas, and the emerald tree boa.
