Georgetown’s Botanic Gardens is one of the must see attractions while visiting Guyana. Gardener John Frederick Waby spent 35 years landscaping the gardens beginning in 1878. In this vast collection of tropical plants and flowers you will find the Victoria Regia Lily, Guyana’s national flower. The Victoria Regia is a water lily that was discovered in 1837 by a German botanist in the Berbice River during an expedition. The plant grows in 4 to 6 feet of water and the larger flowers can grow to a size of a foot in diameter. While strolling through the grounds you will encounter quaint Victorian bridges, ponds, kissing bridges, and canals. The Botanic Gardens is praised as one of the best tropical gardens in the region and Georgetown’s most popular recreation park.
