Another attraction found in Georgetown is the Stabroek Market on Water Street. The first market was not located on the same site as the present day Stabroek Market. It was established in 1792 and found west of where St. Andrew’s Church is now located. The current Stabroek Market was first opened to the public in 1881. The structure itself is built entirely of cast iron and covers an area of over 76,000 square feet, making it the largest public market in the Caribbean and one of the largest all metal markets in the world. (Guyana is culturally aligned with the Caribbean, although it is located in South America) The structure’s cast iron clock tower dominates Georgetown’s scenery. The four dialed clock, which sits sixty feet above the market’s grounds, was bought in 1880 from the E. Howard Company in Boston, Massachusetts. Another interesting attraction to the Stabroek Market is that it extends into the Demerara River by way of a 157 foot long pier so that the market may be reached by land and waterfront. Today’s market has been described as a “Bizarre Bazaar” where “anything from gold jewelry to fruits and vegetables can be found”.
