St. George’s Cathedral is located once again in Georgetown. It is proclaimed as one of the world’s tallest wooden buildings, standing over 130 feet high. The first chapel was built in the early 1800s, but soon became too small for the ever growing congregation. After outgrowing several additions, the decision was made to build an even larger church that opened for worship in June of 1842. William Piercy Austin was consecrated as the first Bishop of Guyana in August of 1842. Less than forty years after the second structure was erected, the church was deemed unsafe. In 1877 a temporary chapel was built until money could be raised to construct a permanent cathedral. Finally, the current St. George’s Cathedral, designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, was completed on November 8, 1894 and consecrated by the second Bishop of Guyana, W.P. Swaby.
