If you are interested in wildlife preservation and conservation, then a trip to Shell Beach would be worth your while. Shell Beach, one of Guyana’s few conventional beaches, is a beach with a purpose. The Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society was founded in 2000 in order to help protect and educate the public on the beaches’ four species of marine turtles: the Leatherback, Green, Hawksbill, and the Olive Ridley who all nest on the beach. Shell Beach is located on a 100 mile stretch of the Atlantic coastline between the mouths of the Pomeroon and Waini rivers. There is a Shell Beach Adventure Tour company owned by Annette Arjoon, co-founder of the Guyana Marine Turtle Conservation Society. For more information on both, visit www.gmtcs.org.gy.
Guyana is not on most people’s list of places they want to see during their lifetime, but hopefully, after reading about these extraordinary attractions, it is becoming easy to see why this little known country is one of South America’s greatest treasures.
