Guam's Economy

Guam’s economy is supported primarily by tourists, the United States military bases located there, some taxes, and other US financial support. The tourism industry relies a lot on the Japanese, since Guam is a fairly short flight from Japan and has many tourist hotels, other attractions like golf courses and gorgeous white-sand beaches, a marine preserve full of fish, and many shopping outlets and malls (many of which are duty-free, a big plus for visitors!). In fact, about 90% of all Guam’s tourists are Japanese, and the economy had been rising with their tourism, until the economic dip that all of Asia took in the early years of the millennium. In 2003, the government in Guam was shorted $314 million, and currently 14% of the working force is unemployed.
