Begin day one in Olympia, Greece, one of the most magical cities on earth. Explore the archaeological sites of this ancient city and visualize the splendor that brought warring nations together for a brief time to compete in games instead of the battle. Begin by touring the archaeological remains of the Sanctuary of Zeus.

As the first site of the Olympic Games, which were held in 776 B.C., Olympia has much to uncover. Although the games were originally only open to Greek men, the Romans were later allowed to compete. Make sure you explore the monuments of the Temples of Zeus and of Hera. The most spectacular building is the 5th century Temple of Zeus, constructed by Livon. The Temple of Hera is where the Olympic flame was lit from the sun and then ran to wherever the games were being played in order to light the torch. Here you will also find the Gymnasion, Palaistra, and the Stadium where races took place.

In the afternoon, visit the Archaeological Museum across the road, whose artifacts include the marble statue of Nike (“Victory”) by Paionios and the 4th century B.C. statue of Hermes by Praxiteles. After exploring the museum, travel south of Olympia where one of the most magnificent temples in Greece is located. The Temple at Bassae, built around 420 B.C. by the Phygeleans, lies upon the top of a mountain plateau. As one of the most well preserved temples in all of Greece, this site is definitely worth the visit.
