» Day Five: Nafplion, Greece
Wake up on day five in the city of Nafplion. This city provides the perfect source for visiting the numerous Classical and Bronze Age sites of the Argolid. The Argolid played a primary role in the history of Greece. It was occupied by the Achaeans around 2000-1900 B.C., and was the most densely populated area of Greece in the Mycenaean period (1580-1100 B.C.)
Begin by observing the great Mycenaean fortress at Tiryns and walking through the remains. Enter through the Lion Gate, bordered by bastions on either side. Observe the immense fortification walls, as you walk past the famous carving of two lions, one on each side of the central column. Mycenae is a Late Bronze Age citadel, which was supposedly the seat of the Greek leader, Agamemnon, during the Trojan War.
