This city holds both wonders from the past and improvements of the future. The antiquity of the city remains intact with such tourist hot spots such as the Acropolis and the Parthenon. While other parts of Athens, continue to change with the times. This previously congested city received a complete makeover when the Olympics came to town in 2004. Having once been extremely congested, Athens now boasts new metro services and miles of pedestrian-friendly streets. Tourists can spend their hours during the day sipping ouzo at sun-lit cafes or exploring the National Archeological Museum. During the night, the fun doesn’t stop for those looking for wild excitement, as raves are a prominent sight in the city.
  • Acropolis: This magnificent religious complex is made up of several temples, which were constructed during the 5th century B.C., and is visible from almost everywhere in the city. The most fascinating sight to behold on the Acropolis is the Parthenon. This temple was dedicated to Athena, and became the model of classical Greek architecture.
  • Plaka: This is the oldest section of Athens, virtually all that existed of the city before it was declared the country’s capital, and contains restaurants, cafes, and tourist shops. The narrow labyrinth of streets in Plaka, which are found below the Acropolis, exude hundreds of people, and are a chief intersection of civilization in Greece. Despite the commercialism, the charm of this area can still be felt.
  • National Archaeological MuseumThis museum originates clear back to 1889 and remains one of the world’s most spectacular museums. Here you will find exquisite classical sculptures and tall Kouros statues. One of the most famous exhibits is the 3,600-year old gold mask of Agamemnon.
  • Aegli Bistro Café: This café remains a legendary night club for most of the 20th century. Found next to the Zappion Hall, the café includes a café-bistro as well as an open-air cinema. You can sit and sip coffee on the terrace while overlooking the Acropolis.
