After leaving Kalambaka, head to Meteora, which is located on the western edge of the plain of Thessaly. The scenery here is breathtaking as ancient Monasteries, possessing invaluable historical and religious treasures, stand suspended between earth and sky, on top of gigantic, perpendicular rocks. On these twenty-four granite rocks, Byzantine monks chose to worship God 600 years ago. Meteora became their monastic community.

Explore the remains and wonder how these monasteries were built on top of these virtually inaccessible rocks. The life of solitude and worship of the monks is portrayed magnificently in the monasteries as they rise towards the sky. This is one of the most awe-inspiring sites on earth: the abysses hanging precariously over the ledges with the Pindus range behind and the picturesque villages below.
